Ikaria means culture! Music, Ikariotikos dance, festivals and life are the main features of culture in Nikaria! Throughout the year, organized many cultural events such as theater performances, concerts, festivals and art exhibitions in all parts of the island, which is very popular among locals and visitors. Various kinds of folk art displayed at the Folklore Museum St. Kirikou and visited folklore collections in various villages, focusing on the Ikaria culture!

The musical tradition of the island, and is one of the main features of the culture developed on the island. Significant influence is received from Asia Minor, which mainly appears in some very old songs, some of which have come to be heard even today. But enough significant influence results and sounds, and musical instruments that existed in nearby mainly islands. Of course, an important factor in the evolution of musical tradition, was the life of Ikarioton through the centuries, the economic difficulties of the people, immigration, lifestyle and emotional connection of people.
Traditional instruments of Ikaria was the lyre and tsampounofylaka which were used exclusively in the feasts, and in all the feasts of Ikarioton. The tsampounofylaka is an instrument made from goatskin, in which they put wooden pipes to produce the sound. These tubes are connected to two external wooden well pipes. The one of them used for blowing through the musician and the air will be produced which is used by internal tubes for the production of music, and the other outer tube had several holes along the well hole at the edge, used to the notes played. Lyra, whose construction was done by locals, contained some specific features, is remembered as Ikarian lyre and even hosted the Folk Art Museum of Athens. Folk musicians in Ikaria was usual in the past, self-taught and cultivated their talent and love for music from their family and their environment.

Ikaria is a place where they are born, grow up and inspired many intellectuals and men of letters, such as Aristides Foutridis, John Zelepos or Tselepis, George Lomvardas and Christodoulos Mavrogiorgos-Tsarganis. These people, each in its own way, illuminated and projected education in Ikaria, by setting a firm foundation for modern Icarus scientists and residents, to continue the work started.
Notably, in recent years, near the village of Arethusa, works with private initiative the "Ikarian Centre ', which undertakes to teach the Greek language and culture to foreign visitors. The Centre was founded in 1995 in Ikaria, when for ten years, during the summer months, organizing summer schools of learning Greek language to foreigners, cultural activities and seminars, to promote linguistic and intercultural skills.
